Fitness Celebrity Interview
Monica Starr
By Jason E. Cohen, Esq., WNBF Pro Bodybuilder
Nothing could have been more accurate for this fitness beauty than the old
saying from the Wizard Of Oz, "Dorothy you are not in Kansas anymore."
Perhaps one of the fastest rising "Starrs" on the fitness scene today is 24
year old Monica Starr, straight from a farm in the middle of Kansas. Believe
it or not, Monica has only completed one full year of Figure competition and
is already being compared to Monica Brant. Trust me, when you meet this girl
in person you will see what everybody is talking about.
So, Monica, is it really true that you were brought up on a farm in a
small town in Oberlin, Kansas?
Monica:
(Laughs) Not only is this true, but my home town is barely on the
map. I grew up on a feedlot in a town that didn't even have a McDonalds or a
movie theatre. I had to drive nearly one hour to buy clothes over the state
line in Nebraska.
Geeez, what did you do for fun or to occupy your time?
Monica:
Well, I guess when you spent your entire life on a farm you really
don't think about it too much. There is plenty to do when you are
responsible for over one thousand head of cattle. In my free time, I love to
ride horses. I guess you could say I was kind of a "Tom Boy" when I was
growing up. I always hung around the guys and that's how I became so
athletic.
What was it like when you moved to a big city like Baltimore at the age
of 22?
Monica:
I guess the best word to describe it is overwhelming! You have to
understand, I came from a town where there was one traffic light and
absolutely no ethnic diversity. Baltimore is a huge city with all different
types of people. I quickly came to realize that in a big city it is every
man for themselves. My first job in Baltimore was working in a local fitness
center. I have always been into sports and I fell in love with fitness and
weight training immediately. A few people in my gym suggested I try doing
some fitness competitions and things kind of took off from there.
I'll say they have taken off. I have heard that you are already being
compared to the likes of Monica Brant?
Monica:
Monica Brant! I hardly believe they are saying that, but if they
are, then I am flattered. I have always looked up to Monica Brant because she
exudes professionalism and has managed to combine a great physique and a
beautiful face. I had the opportunity to meet Monica Brant at last year's
Jan Tana Classic and she was a complete sweetheart. As a matter of fact,
(laughs) I was introduced to her as "the next Monica Brant." I was soooo
embarrassed. Maybe it is because we have the same first name???
Are you doing fitness full time now? What are some of your other
interests?
Monica:
I wish!!! No, I am actually a dental assistant. I really enjoy my
job and I want to pursue a career as a dental hygienist. For now, fitness is
just a hobby for me, but I hope I can supplement my income with some modeling
jobs. I love horse back riding and any type of sport you can imagine. I
guess you could say I have a strong sense of adventure.
What do you do to stay in such great shape all year?
Monica:
Actually, I get a little out of shape in the off-season (laughs). My
problem is that I love candy - I have been known to eat a whole grocery store
sized bag of Skittles in one sitting. I really don't mind doing cardio - the
key for me is to do my cardio as soon as I wake up and then again at the gym
in the afternoon.
I just have to ask this, how many times per day do you hear the phrase,
"Dorothy, you are not in Kansas anymore."?
Monica:
I have to admit I hear that a lot, but I still think it is
funny. As a matter of fact, the Wizard Of Oz is my favorite movie of all
time. I even collect Wizard Of Oz memorabilia. If any of you have any old
Wizard Of Oz collectibles that you don't want send them my way :o)
Anything else you would like to say or talk about?
Monica:
I just want to thank Naturally Ripped News for taking the time to come interview me.
I really am just a small town girl at heart so all this attention is a bit
overwhelming. I am still at the point where I am looking for endorsement
deals or any type of modeling work that comes my way. If anybody wants to
use me, I would love to hear from you. Most of all I want to thank my family,
friends and everybody who has supported me over the years. Please e-mail me
at Starr_Fit@yahoo.com. I would love to hear from ya.
